Surely the Presence of the Lord Is in This Place

I have found myself pouring my heart out to God often in the last 24 hours as I have admitted my weaknesses to Him and asked for Him to give me peace as He directs my life.  I told a friend yesterday that at times I feel like I am back in my early 20s again trying to figure out what God wants me to do with the rest of my life only this time around it is more complicated because I have two children and so many more life experiences.  During my  devotions this morning I read the following quote by Stormie Omartian, "His purpose for our trails is often to bring us humbly before Him to experience a breaking in our inner, independent, self-sufficient selves, and grow us up into compassionate, patient, spiritually strong, God glorifying people.  He uses these situations to teach us how to trust that He loves and cares for us enough to get us through the tough times"  Over this past year God has taught me so much about surrendering everything to Him and trusting Him to work out the details that I don't understand.  This surrender is a daily process and I have discovered that He is my Rock when it feels like I have no where else to turn.  God also faithfully provides other people to support me when I just need to talk about the things I struggle with.  I read may wonderful verses this morning and Hebrews 11:14-16 stood out among them.

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.  For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.  Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 11:14-16 (ESV)

When I finished my devotions and started my day this song was running through my mind.  God is so good to remind me that He is with me always.  I can hold on to this morning as one of those times when He gave me a little extra reminder that He is really listening to the prayers on my heart.

(Sorry not sure how to post this without the links to other youtube videos at the end.)

Goals week 2

Last Weeks Goals:

I didn't accomplish everything on the list because I spent time doing other things not on my list and to be honest I didn't always use my time wisely.  I was blessed to have lunch with three different ladies (a huge encouragement) and got some shopping done for Christmas.

Kids

1-Have Zion and Moriah complete 3 chores each day in order to earn i-pad privileges.
Zion is starting to ask what chores he wants me to do and asking me to pay him money to do chores so he can buy a Lego set.  Moriah cleaned her room on Monday and Zion helped with dishes and laundry.  Both of them get a little irritated when I ask them to pick up toys and want me to come up with other things they can do-so feel free to send ideas.  They are still spending too much time on their i-pads.

2-Spend time each day reading to Zion and Moriah and helping them with their home work
I pretty much failed at this one.  Zion and I studied two days for spelling and Moriah and I completed her homework one evening.  We did do a few activities together this week including putting up our Christmas Tree and watching a movie together that I remember enjoying as a child.

Photos

3-Complete our 2011 digital photo book (I have 2-3 months of pictures to add before I can print it)
I worked on this book for almost two hours on Thursday and got through 1/2 of our December pictures.  I need to finish December and put in all the pictures for July. I really don't mind working on my book-I just need to get motivated to sit at the computer and start working on it.

4-Put the photos I ordered last week in pictures frames
This is about 80% done. I need to buy another picture frame and order a few pictures in different sizes to fill a few empty frames.

Other

5-Spend at least on hour de-cluttering my office area.
I spent 30 minutes on both Wednesday and Friday doing this.  Setting a timer was really helpful in getting me started on this overwhelming task.

6-Spend an hour cleaning/organizing my closet.
Worked on my closet for over an hour on Saturday and got rid of summer clothing that I didn't wear this summer. Organized my winter shirts by color and moved to the center of my closet.

This weeks goals:

I am going to cut down on my goals for this week since we have a lot of Thanksgiving plans.

Kids
1-Have Zion and Moriah complete 3 chores each day in order to earn i-pad privileges.

Photos
2-Finish putting December 2011 photos in digital photo book
3-Print labels for Christmas Cards so I can save on postage by passing them out to family members at Thanksgiving events.  Hoping to have the kids stick on the labels.

Other
4-Spend 1 hour cleaning office and entry area.
5-Get food and clothing ready for Thankgiving events.

Cherished Friendships

Working on my 2011 photo book tonight and came across this picture from December of 2011.  God has blessed me with many friends over the years, but these two have been my friends (and cousins) since childhood.  Their dedication to me over the years is amazing.  We now live in three different states: Sarah in Ohio, Heidi in Kansas, and me in Indiana and yet every time I talk to one of them we pick up right where we left off the last time.  Heidi just blessed with an email this afternoon to find out if I am making progress on my goals for the week.  (Her email inspired me to work on my photo book tonight instead of going to bed.) Looking forward to seeing them both Thanksgiving weekend. I would write more about these wonderful ladies, but I must get back to my photo book if I am going to meet my goal.

Accountablity

I am guessing that I am not the only one who struggles with having a huge mental to do list and not knowing where to start.  One of the challenges I have with getting things done around my house is the fact that I don't have another adult to keep me accountable.  A few months ago I realized that until Zach's death I always lived with other adults (first my parents, then various roommates, and finally Zach).  Adults who cared if I left dishes in the sink, if the house hadn't been cleaned for weeks, and if certain areas of the house were overrun with clutter.  While Zion and Moriah have many wonderful traits they are happy to step over messes and as a rule don't care how the house looks unless if effects their ability to eat, play, sleep, and get attention from me.

I have a lot of tasks I would like to complete before the end of the year and I am very aware that they will not get done unless I have some accountability.  Last spring posting weekly updates on my de-cluttering process was really effective for me, so starting this week I am going to post goals and updates on my progress.  A few of my goals will be related to getting my kids to help me around the house, some will be little things that I just keep putting off, and the rest will likely be related to organizing/printing/finishing photo projects.

A few things to keep in mind: 1-I have someone clean my house every other week because it needs to be done and to motivate me to pick up the clutter so she can clean (this has provided great accountability and stress relief). 2-I decreased my hours at work for the months of November and December, so I can get things done and be less stressed about holiday travel.  3-My motivation for doing this is not to have all of you know how much (or little) I get done in a week, so I will only be posting a few key goals not my entire to do list. If I happen to motivate you to get a few extra things done feel free to comment about that and if I am slow at posting weekly updates feel free to send me a reminder (jennylbertsch@gmail.com).

Goals for this week:

Kids
1-Have Zion and Moriah complete 3 chores each day in order to earn i-pad privileges.
2-Spend time each day reading to Zion and Moriah and helping them with their home work

Photos
3-Complete our 2011 digital photo book (I have 2-3 months of pictures to add before I can print it)
4-Put the photos I ordered last week in pictures frames

5-Spend at least on hour de-cluttering my office area.
6-Spend an hour cleaning/organizing my closet.

*Make something beautiful*

This song started playing on Pandora this afternoon and I realized that it reflects the prayer on my heart today. I know in my head that GOD is working in my life, but some days my heart struggles to trust that HE is working and HE has everything under control.  Continuing to pray that GOD will take my life and make something beautiful from the broken pieces that I know exist within me.  I am so thankful that I serve an amazing strong GOD who can use my vulnerable places for HIS glory.

Reflections on Life

Last night before I went to bed I looked at the calendar and realized that if Zach were still on this earth today would have been our eight wedding anniversary.  I started thinking about it when I woke up this morning and God gave me an overwhelming feeling of peace.  I have struggled over the last year to figure out where to fit into this life.  I have said to God countless times: "What is next?"  "What should I do now?" "Do I have a future beyond the painful journey I have been on?"  At times God has given me clear direction and I move forward.   At other times it feels like His silent and there is nothing I can do but wait for Him so show me the next step. I struggle with this because I like to know what is next so I can make a plan.  Some of the things He has asked me to do over the last year have been really hard and I still deal with the mental battle of why He would add these things to my already overwhelmed mind.  I remind myself that God knows what He is doing and that the story He is writing in my life is more beautiful that I can ever imagine (and I have a good imagination).    A few weeks ago I read Ephesians 3:20-21 (NIV) and found a huge amount of comfort:

"Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us,to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen."

As I think about my marriage to Zach this morning, I am once again reminded that I should be praising God for the gift He gave me in Zach. In late 2005, God clearly showed me I was supposed to marry Zach and although it took months for Zach to actually ask me to marry Him, God took care of all the details that I worried about during that time.  Zach and I didn't have a perfect marriage.  I knew all his weaknesses and he knew mine.  I shake my head that some of the silly things we argued about and praise God that He used us even thought we failed in so many ways.  Our story didn't go the way I would have written it, but I am okay with that.  Zach is in the Place he was made for with the Person he was made for and that gives me reason to rejoice.

Zach and I talked often about the life the kids and I would have after his death.  It was important to him that I didn't get lost in grief.  He wanted me to move forward with life.  He didn't want me to dwell on the expectations other people have of how our family should grieve or when our family should move forward with new opportunities.  He wanted our family to be directed by God, so we could be used to further God's kingdom..  In the last few weeks of his life Zach worried most often about how I would be able to provide for all Zion and Moriah's needs on my own.  Those who know me best know that it hasn't been easy.  I struggle with all the things that I don't understand.  I get tired and overwhelmed and as a result am not the woman or mom I want to be.  As I talked about these things with my counselor yesterday she reminded me of the following verses that she had read during her morning devotions.

"Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.  God, the Lord, is my strength; He makes my feet like the deer's; He makes me tread in high places."  -Habakkuk 3:17-19 (ESV)

Even when life seems to have many struggles I need to keep focus on the fact that God is working and that I need to continue to be thankful for all that He has done in my life.  As I was searching for these verses I came across Zephaniah Chapter 3:17-18 (ESV).

"Fear not, O Zion: let not your hands grow weak.  The Lord your God is in your midst, a mightly one who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by His love; He will exult over you with loud singing.  I will gather those of you who mourn for the festival, so that you no longer suffer reproach..."

Thanks for joining me for my morning reflections/devotions.  And thank you for your prayers.  I will end with the verse of the day from BibleGateway.com and the song that is going through my mind:

So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.-Hebrews 10:35-36

It is Well with my Soul
1. When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
 when sorrows like sea billows roll;
whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.

Refrain:
It is well with my soul,
it is well, it is well with my soul.
2. Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
 let this blest assurance control,
that Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
and hath shed his own blood for my soul.

3. My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

4. And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
 the clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
the trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
even so, it is well with my soul.

Morning Devotion

A good reminder from my morning devotion:

And it is impossible to please God without faith.  Anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that God exists and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him.  Hebrews 11:6 (NLT)

"God calls us all to do some faith stretching now and then.  Whether we are called to leave our comfort zones to obey and act, or to rest and trust in God in a difficult season of life,  He always rewards great faith with wonderful blessings.... Maybe stepping outside of your comfort zone to obey God seems like a too much of a stretch right now.  Keep in mind that although it may seem impossible, God will never stretch us beyond what we are capable of in His strength-not ours..."

Labor Day Weekend

We headed to Ohio for Labor Day weekend to attend a Bauman Family Reunion and spend time with relatives who were visiting from out of state and from England.  The highlight of our trip was spending Saturday at Ramsier Farms.  The kids had a blast with with their cousins and second cousins.  They especially liked the corn box (think sand box), the slides, and the tunnels. We didn't try the corn maze this year.

August 23rd and 24th

We traveled to Lafayette, Indiana on August 23rd for my cousin Marshall's wedding to Grace.  So thankful for the way God worked in Marshall and Grace's lives to bring them together.  We had a lot of fun seeing family members from Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, and Arizona.    After the wedding the kids and I spent the rest of the weekend with Kellen and Elizabeth. Zion was thrilled that Kellen was willing to challenge him to I pad games and Moriah loved all of Elizabeth's craft supplies.  We visited the West Lafayette Apostolic Church and the kids had fun searching for bugs in the front yard both before and after church.  We enjoyed dinner with Kirk and Keri and their kids at Kellen and Elizabeth's on Sunday afternoon before heading home.

My House Is A Mess-Renovations #1

On Monday the updates I have been planning for my kitchen for the past few months started.  To prepare I moved all the kitchen items from my counter tops, emptied all the lower cabinets, pulled out all the drawers, and moved out all the furniture except for my table.  I also moved the refrigerator to the garage (with help of course) and unhooked the ice maker being careful to make sure the water was turned off at the pipe under the sink.  I did most of the prep the week before and left Friday morning for a weekend in Illinois  with my friend Leann.  Returned Sunday night to a house that smelled really bad, but I was too tired to think much about the cause.  Soon after the crew arrived Monday to tear out my tiles and carpet, I made a trip downstairs and discovered water in my drop ceiling again (yes this has happened before).  Turns out my ice maker line slowly dripped water onto the kitchen floor all weekend.  Wet floors, walls, drop ceiling, and carpets.  We have had loud fans going all week to dry things out and I long for quiet again (the kids and I can hardly hear each other talk).

Every time I walk past my newly decorated guest room I try to look the other way because it is full of kitchen items.  This can be tricky as I step over my dinning room rug and avoid running into the leaves for my table that are in the hallway outside the guest room door.

Guest Room
On Wednesday the crew showed up to tear out the counter tops, tile back splash, oven, stove top, and two cabinets.  They installed part of the new counter top and unpacked my new cabinets.  The crew wasn't able to come back Thursday or Friday, so I have been without a kitchen sink and am actually looking forward to washing dishes.  They kids and I have been eating leftovers heated in the microwave which is currently sitting on my desk.  Excited that tomorrow they are coming back to install the new cabinets and that the new floors should be installed Tuesday and Wednesday.  Not sure when everything will be done, but hoping to be able to start refilling my lower cabinets tomorrow evening so my house isn't so messy.

Kitchen-in progress
On Friday I picked up a new decorating book started reading it today.  Really enjoying it so far because it isn't about creating a perfect house it is about making wherever you live a "home."  I just finished reading this section and thought is was worth sharing with my female friends who like me may be constantly trying to figure out how to "improve"  or "perfect" various areas of your lives.

"Giving up is the first step to creating the home you love.  The goal of perfection does nothing but hold you back.  Giving up on trying to have the perfect house is a form of rest.  In her book Choosing Rest, Sally Breedlove says, "We find rest in the incompleteness of the present moment as we learn to recognize the goodness of what is and we trust that what is needed for the future will be added at the proper time."

Allowing things in our homes and in our lives to be incomplete, imperfect, and undone in some ways is a form of trust.  Can you give up and allow some imperfections in your life?

We get stuck in this way of thinking:
I want to like my house, therefore I shall change it until I like it.
I want to like my body, therefore I shall change it until I like it.
I want to like my life, therefore I shall change it until I like it.

Instead of focusing on this way of thinking, what if you changed what you like?"

A Shared Journey

I spend most of my day today distracting myself so I wouldn’t have to think about how I spent the last two days, knowing that if I allowed myself to think I would experience pain.  In the past few years I made a new friend.  We met each other in 2003, when I was assigned to say at her house overnight.  I was a single gal on a trip to Illinois and she was a new bride looking forward to many years of marriage.  I don’t remember much about our first meeting, but I do remember the beautiful pictures in Leann's house of her with her husband on the beach in Hawaii on their honeymoon.

I don’t remember seeing Leann again until 2011 when we met at a restaurant in Indianapolis.  Both married, Leann had three children and was expecting her fourth and I had two children.  When we met our husbands, Zach and Derek, formed an instant bond by comparing their bald heads and discussing the medical treatments they were going through to prolong their lives on this earth.  We didn’t connect much in person often after that, but did keep up with each other’s lives via blogs and texts.  They stopped at our house for an hour or so on their way home from Ohio one weekend and supported us at Cancer Redemption Project Presentations in Illinois.  We tried to schedule a weekend for us to get together in Illinois in the spring of 2013, but Derek ended up in the hospital and Zach was given the news that his time on earth was short.

On June 6, 2013 God ended Zach’s three year battle with cancer and welcomed him into Heaven.  Derek and Leann attended Zach’s funeral knowing that unless God chose to perform a miracle of healing there was a funeral in their future too.  Leann and I continued to communicate occasionally via phone calls and texts.  The kids and I were blessed to stay overnight at their house twice in early 2014.  Our kids loved playing together.  During those visits Leann and I talked about life and raising kids,  but a lot of our conversations centered around Leann surviving the continued battle with cancer and me surviving the battle after cancer.  I last saw Derek on May 10th.  His body was so weak and I knew that it had taken great effort for him and Leann to drive to Goodfield to hear Psalm 100 sing and support me as I talked about the Cancer Redemption Project.  It was hard to see Derek because in him I could see Zach and I knew that the Cancer was winning the battle against his body.

On July 2, 2014 God chose to take Derek home after a three year battle with cancer.  As I watched Leann and her children follow the casket down the aisle yesterday my pain was great because I remember my similar trip a year ago.  I grieve because it is Leann’s time to start on the road as woman raising children without her husband. It is her time to figure out how to spend her life now that it is not consumed by cancer treatments, doctors, and unexpected medical emergencies.  It is her time to figure out how to live without her best friend.  I know by God’s grace she will survive the next year of her life just as I have survived my last year.  I know that God with show Himself to her in ways He has never shown Himself before, but I also know that the process of healing comes with questions, tears, pain, sleepless nights, and fear about the unknown future.

Please join me in praying for Leann, Lexi, Wesley, Whitley, and Lainey.  As you pray for them praise God for the work that He did through the cancer in both Derek and Zach’s lives.  Both were so passionate about life and about furthering God’s kingdom.  God asked them to use their cancer in different ways, but in the end they both were a testimony of living and dying well because of the presence of Jesus in their lives.  It makes me smile to think of them both strong and healthy enjoying life together in heaven.  Life is hard, but God is so Good.

De-Cluttering Update

On February 17th I posted my intentions to sort through my entire house by June 1st and get rid of at least 21 items every week.  June 1st has come and gone, so I decided that it is time for an update.  As I look through my house I would guess that if I would count everything I got rid of it would add up to well over 21 items each week even though I didn't count every week.  I did not succeed in getting through everything I wanted to, but I would guess I got about 90% of the way there.  I still need to work on pictures and craft supplies, random boxes in the basement storage room, and my office area.  Over the last few weeks I got rid of over 60 magazines, 11 college text books, a ton of paperwork, and over 50 books (I sold these to Half Price Books for a way to little amount, but at least they are out of my house).  I also sorted through 5 drawers and threw away or gave away almost everything in them.  My sister and I went through Zion's toys and I was really impressed by how many things he was willing to give away (I think he is hoping for more Legos for his birthday).  Today I cleaned out my bathroom cupboards and got rid of an entire trash bag of random stuff.  From this process I learned how easy it is to hold on to things when storage and closet space are available.  I also learned that I am not as attached to the things in my house as I thought I might be.  I honestly could have gotten rid of a lot more without any emotional trauma.  Lastly I learned that one of the more challenging things about getting rid of stuff is knowing what to do with it. I felt rather guilty about throwing things away at times (possibly why I haven't went through the last few boxes in the basement.)

Moriah wanted to show Zion's room even though she didn't help.

Bathroom Linen Closet

A few weeks ago I was feeling rather burnout with the whole de-cluttering process and took advantage of a buy one get one free paint sale at Ace Hardware.  I painted my upstairs guest room over Memorial Day weekend and the following weekend went shopping with my sisters (Joy & Josie) and cousin (Sarah) for accessories.  I was technically shopping for things for my sister Joy's house, but she didn't seem to mind that I had my own cart.  The four of us ended up filling Josie's minivan so all of our houses got some updates. Now for the fun pictures:

I want to thank each of you for your prayers and support. As I reflect on the fact that Zach died a year ago today, I can look back and see God’s faithfulness in providing for our family and for the Cancer Redemption Project (see www.cancerredemption.com for an update). I will be honest in saying that the path He is taking the kids and I on isn’t easy. I have more questions then answers about our future, but God has taught me more clearly in the past year than any other time in my life that He is with me always and I can trust Him to take care of the unknown.

Recently, I have reflected on the words of Acts 22. Jesus speaks to Saul on the road to Damascus. Saul’s response in verse 10 is, “What shall I do Lord?” Jesus responds, “Rise and go into Damascus and there you will be told all that is appointed for you to do.” In the rest of chapter 22, God gives Saul (Paul) little pieces of the plans He has for him starting with completely surrendering to God’s will. I can relate to Paul’s question and his struggle to understand God’s plan for Him in light of His history and his weaknesses (v. 19-21). I often ask “Lord, what do you want me to do?” Sometimes it feels like He is silent, but I know from my past experiences that He wants me to press forward with the daily tasks of life and wait for Him to give me clear direction for the things that seem bigger than I can understand. I find peace in the fact that God is in control.

Priorities

I was in Florida over my birthday this year and had some quiet time to reflect on my life.  I am slowly reading through the book "Say Goodby to Survival Mode" by Crystal Paine and on my birthday I read a chapter about identifying what our personal priorities are so we can build our activities and lives around the things that are most important to us.  I wrote down a lot of things that day and then narrowed my priorities down to a list of 6.  I am finally taking time today to type them out and post them where I can see them often as a way to keep myself accountable.

1-Cling to Jesus for strength, direction, and peace.
2-Love and nurture Zion and Moriah by spending quality and quantity time with them
3-Get my household in order so I am in a good place to bless others and move forward with opportunities God brings my way.
4-Take care of my body by getting rest, exercising, and eating a healthy diet.
5-Build close relationships for my mental and emotional well-being and to encourage others.
6-Use the talents God has given me to be a voice for vulnerable children, encourage adoptive parents, and bless other women.

At times I feel like so much of my life is out of my control, but as I read through this list again I realize there is a lot I can control.  Instead of focusing on the things I can't control, I need to make the effort to concentrate my time and energy on the areas of my life that I can control.  I need to give the unknowns in my life to Jesus once again, so I can have greater peace and joy in the here and now.

Graduation

Both Zion and Moriah had graduation ceremonies this week.  Zion graduated from Kindergarten on Tuesday night and Moriah graduated from pre-school on Thursday night.  I feel really blessed by their four amazing teachers, Miss Towle, Mrs. Gerber, Mrs. Girod, and Miss Tonner.
